Women Travelers in Egypt

Women Travelers in Egypt

If you are a woman planning to travel to Egypt, you will want to read this Egypt travel information first. It is a good idea to understand the culture before traveling alone.

Understanding Egyptian Culture

If you are a woman planning to travel to Egypt, you'll want to read this Egypt travel information first. It is a good idea to understand the culture before traveling alone. Most women planning a journey to Egypt will all ready be aware of some of the cultural and social conventions that affect women travelers in Egypt.

For example, modesty of dress is generally a good idea. Though many urban areas of the country are far more casual about women in Western garb, there are still a great many everyday citizens who prefer a woman to cover her arms and legs in public settings.

A reasonable “rule of thumb” is to dress conservatively, and model behaviors on local women. For example, skirts should be no shorter than just below the knee, forgo wearing shorts all together, and consider a head cloth or covering when entering religious buildings.

Additionally, women travelers in Egypt, particularly those traveling alone, should look for hotels that impose a bit more security. Egyptians are very respectful and courteous, and if hotel staff becomes aware that a woman is alone, they will usually demonstrate a bit more concern and interest towards her safety.

Getting Help from Female Residents

Another interesting fact that is not often addressed in standard tour guides is the willingness of female residents in the major cities of Egypt to help female travelers in any way they can.

For example, all busy areas of the cities have “tourist police” to assist travelers. While this is an excellent service, such people are not often available in markets or regular street locations. Many women travelers in Egypt report that local women have helped when they are lost, being harassed by street vendors or if they have just appeared fatigued or upset.

Public Transportation

Interestingly, many local women also approach western women on the public transportation in cities like Cairo and Alexandria. Many tourists do not rely on public transportation, but for women travelers in Egypt, these are actually quite helpful.

The first two cars of each transport are reserved for the exclusive use of women (in observation of Muslim law) and many independent female travelers speak of their pleasant experiences when they board the streetcars of Alexandria and the “Metro” in Cairo.

Though westerners of both sexes are permitted to ride wherever they like on public transportation, many women travelers discover the fun of mingling with the local women.

Look to Work with a Female Guide

Most travelers to Egypt will rely on the services of local guides – this is due in part to language barriers, a desire to get detailed information about some of the historic sites or to get a good experience of “real” Egyptian life, and to focus on the surroundings instead of trying to navigate unknown towns, cities and streets.

While this is a great idea, women travelers in Egypt should look to work with a local female guide in order to be sure that all possible social conventions are followed – such as issues around photography, dress, dining and social or cultural behaviors.
