Plan a Visit to Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum in Jordan is also known as The Valley of the Moon. It is a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in south Jordan at 60 Km to the east of Aqaba. The area attracts an increasing number of tourists, particularly trekkers and climbers, but also for camel and horse safari or simply 'day-trippers' from Aqaba or Petra.
Lawrence of Arabia
In a quiet corner of southern Jordan is the amazing site known as the Wadi Rum. It is the largest canyon area throughout all of Jordan and contains evidence of prehistoric inhabitation as well as being known for its more recent connections to history. T.E. Lawrence, otherwise known as Lawrence of Arabia, used the Wadi Rum as his hidden base throughout 1917 and 1918, as well as a cluster of cliffs is named the “Seven Pillars of Wisdom” from his famous book.
Getting to Wadi Rum
Visitors can easily reach the area from the port city of Aqaba, and this is the reason that so many travelers from Egypt also appear in the wadi too. In fact, regular bus service leaves directly from Aqaba to the Wadi Rum visitor center. From this point a traveler can pay their entrance fee, hire a guide, and choose to travel into the area via a 4x4 vehicle or on the back of an accommodating camel. In addition to direct bus services there are also options for travelers to hire a private taxi or use one of the many buses headed to Petra too.
The area is so popular that it is frequently included in a daytrip or overnight excursion made by a traveler from neighboring Egypt. Most visitors will arrive in Jordan via the ferry service from Taba to Aqaba. From there the guide service will bring travelers to the Wadi Rum site for a day of exploration before heading northward to Petra. This is a valuable experience available to those in northern Egypt and is a great idea for an overnight adventure.
What to See?
What is there to see in the Wadi Rum site? Travelers will have a large number of natural and man-made structures to view...
There is the Umm Fruth Rock Bridge; a building noted to be Lawrence’s house which was originally a Nabataean structure (created by the same people responsible for the rock carvings of Petra); a popular spring called Lawrence’s Spring; the Nabataean Temple which also contains early Kufic rock art; the Anfashieh Inscriptions and Red Sand dunes; and the famous Seven Pillars of Wisdom rock formation near to the visitor’s center. There is also the Jebal Khaz’ali site which is a narrow canyon containing historic rock carvings as well.
Many travelers are just as impressed by the desert as they are the cliffs and natural sites in the region, and even those traveling independently are advised to hire a guide in order to see the finest dunes and locations.
