How to Travel to Alexandria, Egypt

Travel to Alexandria

Travel to Alexandria in Egypt is as simple as hopping aboard a commercial jetliner. An amazing locale for any history buff, Alexandria is an absolute must see.

Travel to Alexandria from America or Europe

You’re not exactly Alexander the Great when it comes to maneuvering through traffic, are you? So what’s the best way to get to and out of Alexandria, Egypt? It depends on where you’re coming from in the first place...

If you are traveling to Alexandria, Egypt from America then you will need to leave the homeland from a big city such as Miami, Florida, Denver, Colorado, Chicago, Illinois or Los Angeles, California. Your first stop will be at a European destination, such as Frankfurt, Germany. Even if you are coming from Europe, such as from London England, you will most likely change planes in Frankfurt, Germany.

Actually, you might want to consider first traveling to Cairo and then from Cairo to Alexandria.

Afterwards, you may have a choice of what airport you want to land in Alexandria. First, there is the El Nouzha Airport, the primary airport, which flies all around the Middle East. However, with this airline, you will have to travel from Athens and on Olympic Airlines, as this is the airport’s only connection to Europe.

Your second choice is that of Borg el Arab Airport, served by Lufthansa from Frankfurt, Emirates from Dubai. You even have the option of landing at Cairo, since it’s just a short drive away from Alexandria. In fact, most travelers will prefer Cairo because of its better connections and better choice of airlines with Super Jet and Western Delta.

Traveling to Alexandria from Cairo

What if you want to take a shorter stroll to Alexandria, perhaps from a nearby Egyptian city like Cairo? If that’s the case then you might want to take a train. Taking a train from Ramses Station may actually be the least complicated and most comfortable way to get to Alexandria. Trains run every hour from 6 AM to 10 PM though travelers are advised to only choose the most reliable services such as Egyptian Railways. When you’re coming back to Alexandria you can depart from Misr Station.

Should you take a car instead of a train and save on finances? It’s certainly not a death wish, but reports of confusing and occasionally hectic traffic situations are not far-fetched. A drive usually takes about three hours and you will be driving at a speed limit of 90-100 km/hr on some roads, with 2-3 lanes in each direction. As you can figure, this makes for crowded and potentially dangerous driving.

Finally, you have the option of driving by bus. Buses usually are comfortable and your scheduling is reasonable, though the pick-up and drop-off point will affect timing. For example, most bus lines will start from Almaza Bus Station in Heliopolis, Cairo and then stop by landmark places like Midan Tahrir and Giza before reaching Alexandria. This could add another two hours onto your ride. These are your options for travel to Alexandria.
