Tombs of Ancient Egyptian Nobility
If you have been searching for luxury tours and have come across something known as Tombs of the Nobles, then first understand what exactly this means. The term “Tombs of the Nobles” is used to refer collectively to tombs of Egyptian nobility, such as workers, foremen, priests, soldiers, viziers or governors, officials and princes. Because royalty was involved, these tombs were usually located in a major site in Ancient Egypt.
Four Types of Tombs
There are four different types of tombs of ancient Egyptian nobility, and each one in different parts of Egypt. There are the Tombs of the Nobles in Luxor, which is in Lower Egypt, as well as the tombs in Saqqara, which include both royal and non-royal tombs from the first two dynasties. There are also the ancient tombs in Amarna (both North and South) and the Tombs of the Nobles in Aswan, also known as the Qubbet el-Hawa.
Qubbet el-Hawa
Usually when you hear about the Tombs of the Nobles in guided tours you are focusing on Qubbet el-Hawa. Qubbet el-Hawa’s tombs are a group of rock cut tombs (also known as the Princes’ tomb) that rest on the west side of the Nile River.
The significance of these tombs is that they are positively ancient. They date back to the Old Kingdom, and all the way through the Middle Kingdom and New Kingdom. Besides holding the bodies of these old princes, the tombs also contain linked family complexes and important biographical texts.
Tourists remark that the wall paintings inside the tombs are exceptionally vivid. These artistic painting illustrate every day Egyptian life and also include hieroglyphic biographies and inscriptions. The “finest” art is said to be the tombs of Sarenput I and II as well as the royals of Tomb 31. Besides the above-mentioned royals you can also visit the tombs of Pepynakht, Harkhuf, Khunes and Mekhu Qubbet Al Hawwa.
