While it’s lovely to look around the city of Cairo, Egypt, eventually you may want to take a breather and enjoy a good show. What can you expect from Cairo theatres and other live entertainment? Cairo theatres are usually formal events and offer exciting shows as well as fine dining.

Cairo is a tourist city so you can count on most theatre staff speaking English. The theatres that aren’t bilingual involve very simple operations of payment and seating, and feature famous musical performances or other accessible entertainment shows. Therefore, language is usually not an issue.

The Mena House Oberoi

The Mena House Oberoi is a grand heritage hotel and theatre in one and offers great shows as well as a fantastic environment. Expect these hotel shows to showcase lounge singers, performing either Arabic or even Western music. This is among the best of theatres on Pyramids Road, though there are numerous other Cairo events.

The Cairo Opera House

The Cairo Opera House and Opera and Ballet House feature breathtaking performances and very exquisite surroundings. In fact, the city is known for its musical performances and features some of the world’s most sought-after singers.

What’s a trip to Cairo without a good dance? The Cairo Opera House is the best place to check for new dance performances and the peak season runs from September through May. You can expect to see everything from classic ballet to modern and ethnic choreography, foreign dance troupes and folk dancing.

Other Theatres

If you want more dramatic shows then try the State Theatre on Abdel Khalek Sarwat Street in Downtown Cairo, Egypt. Other theatres of interest include the Cultural Palace Sector on Samer Theatre, Agouza and the Hanager Arts Centre Opera House Grounds in Gezira. Most of the culturally based music you will hear will be jazz or Arabic, and occasionally traditional Egyptian music.

The Cairo Film Festival

The Cairo Film Festival is a popular event that takes place late in the year and many theaters take part in the festival, occasionally allowing “uncensored” films to be seen. Some tourists have complained that published listings of movie showings are usually an hour in advance of when the movie actually begins. It’s easy to see that Egyptians believe in punctuality!

You can catch Cinema Cairo for a movie and watch both “foreign” and local Egyptian films. Don’t worry, most foreign films are subtitled for the benefit of tourists.
