A Look at Petra in Jordan

Petra, Jordan

Petra in Jordan is a historic and archaeological city that has rock cut architecture and water conduits system. Established sometime around the 6th century BC as the capital city of the Nabataeans, it is a symbol of Jordan as well as its most visited tourism attraction.

The Rose-Red City of Petra

There is a famous historic site in southern Jordan that millions will recognize and yet will not know the name. This is the ancient carved city of Petra that has appeared in dozens of movies and television shows and which is the ancient capital city of the people known as the Nabataeans. The size, beauty, and overall historic value of Petra has allowed it to be listed as a UNESCO Heritage Site, and it is currently the most visited location in all of Jordan.

Many people refer to Petra as the “Rose-Red City” because of the coloration of the sandstone cliffs from which the entire site was carved. It contains the gorgeous Treasury, the equally impressive Monastery, an amphitheater, and a lengthy stretch of facades that front many ancient tombs as well.

Two Routes

Visitors can gain entrance to the city via two routes – the Siq or the Wadi Muthlim. Either way, there is only one method of transport by which travelers can enter – their own two feet. The only exception to this rule is the option for riding a camel, donkey, or horse from a local guide. This might be the wisest choice for those with a limited time frame or those unaccustomed to the heat or the conditions.

Tours to Petra from Egypt

One ideal approach to a visit to Petra is through a daytrip itinerary with a tour service. There are many opportunities available, and a trip to Petra is actually a very popular choice for those on a visit to Egypt. This is because the Cairo and the Luxor airports will both quickly bring a visitor to the Taba Heights region. From Taba a traveler can board the ferry that brings them into the Jordanian port city of Aqaba. From there it is a short ride northward into the desert, and to Petra.

Opting for a tour service trip also allows the traveler to enjoy a guided experience, which is remarkably helpful when interpretation of the architecture, history, and meaning of the Petra site is desired. It is also a great way to gain access to valid passes well in advance of arrival on the site.

Remember, Petra is actually considered to be an archaeological park and comes with a heftier entrance fee. All visitors must purchase the passes based on the number of days they intend to tour the site, and most Egypt tour packages roll these costs into the fees associated with the daytrip instead. This usually also includes a meal or two, access to the museum, and all land and water transportation.
