What to Do in Nuweiba?
Want to go dancing in Nuweiba? How about the nightly disco at the Hilton, Helnan, or Dolphin Beach. In fact, in season there are beach-party discos at most of the hotel bars. Plus, you will find some live music at Nuweiba Village (once the Helnan), as well as the Hilton's pool bar. Local beer (Stella) is usually around $3 U.S., while imports such as Heineken go for about $5 in hotel bars. This is not too bad, but if you look around you might find a better deal or two.
Want a change of pace from the bars and pubs? Try out the beach cafes in Tarabin, with their music and candlelight. There is quite a nice mix of musical styles to be enjoyed; everyhting from oriental drum music to a touch of oriental life mixed with international live music and dancing. If you'd prefer a very relaxed atmosphere, you should try the Habiba village, where you can just let the hours drift by sitting, talking, and watching the stars.
For the more adventurous, there is also the opportunity to partake of a traditional Bedouin dinner in the desert. Another alternative is night scuba diving.
Excursions - Sinai
There are many very popular excursions from which to choose. For instance, if you'd like to view some early Bronze Age burial chambers, you might take the trip from Nuweiba is to St. Catherine's monastery. This trip often includes side-trips to Nawamis, too. Other stops might include the Stone of Inscriptions, with its Byzantine and Roman writings and wall paintings (stories about hunting for leopard, ostrich, etc.); there are even messages to and from those who have traveled this route before you.
If you have $25 to $40 to spare, you can take a camel trip. For example, a three-day Colored Canyon or five-day Ain Hudra trek usually runs about $40 per person, per day. However, the same tour can be arranged by jeep, and will take only a day.
You can also visit the most beautiful and biggest oasis in South Sinai, at Ain Um Ahmad. Or you can take the Colored Canyon and Oasis Ain Hudra (biblical Hazeroth) tours, which take you to palm gardens and great landscape. You will see that the land in the area is carefully cultuvated by Bedouins growing fruits such as oranges, almonds, peaches, figs, and dates, along with some corn, wheat, and vegetables.
Jeep trips to Ras Abu Gallum, a nature protectorate, are also available and very popular. This is a beautiful bay that has top-notch scuba diving and snorkeling. Other excursions might include a three-day Jeep Tour to Serabit El Khadem, where the Turquoise Mines and temple ruins of the Goddess Hathor are located.
If fishing is your thing, you can organize some wonderful trips in Tarabin.
And we don't want to forget about the diving. Boats such as the live-aboard Princess Mikela offer diving trips between Taba and Nuweiba. In fact, in Nuweiba you may also swim with the free dolphin Lady Olin and her baby, an exciting and moving experience.
Extensions - Petra, Jordan
If you want to visit Petra, Jordan travel extensions are available from Nuweiba. These are usually one-day journeys, and should cost approximately $150 U.S., excluding the transportation fee.
