Location and Size

Mallawi is certainly not the most popular destination in Egypt, but it still has its following of tourists as well as a healthy population of locals amounting to 119,283. Mallawi is a small city in Egypt, not to be confused with Malawi, the Republic of Malawi, also in Africa. This Mallawi is the capital of the governorate of Minya.

The district capital is located on the west bank of the lbrahimiya Canal between the Bahr Yusuf and the Nile River. It is known internationally as a farm city, one that produces textiles and handicrafts. The total size of Mallawi is about three acres. It is mostly characterized by its rural charms.

What to See?

What really makes the city special are its many ancient Egyptian artifacts, which are carefully preserved for tourists. What kind of artifacts can you see? There is a small museum that offers displays of artifacts from Tuna al-Gebel and Hermopolis. There are a handful of restaurants and food stops but no hotels. There is also a Coptic Orthodox Church in the area, which is famous for its artwork and a Hindu/Gothic-style feudal palace, about 150m from the main road in.

Unfortunately, security is an issue in Mallawi. The area has been known as a center point for armed rebellion occurring through the 1990s and the city has not yet shaken that reputation or the concerns of many tourists who still try to avoid Mallawi.

What can you expect if you travel to Mallawi? There is heavy police presence in the area, which is actually good news in terms of safety. The more prepared officials are, the faster they respond to any potential threats. However, the conflict has taken the toll on the economy over the years so don’t expect to find a tourist city-friendly anywhere in the area. In fact, most policemen discourage sightseeing, especially by Westerns, and may sometimes impose a city curfew.

Nevertheless, many tourists still want to visit Mallawi on private tours because of its dangerous thrills. If you come to Mallawi, then first understand that it’s not a war zone. Rather, it is a city that has faced some problems in the past and now has heightened its security in response.

You can travel to Mallawi by way of taxi or by your own vehicle, however, due to local laws you must have a police escort at all times. While Mallawi is obviously not Cairo when it comes to fun and sightseeing, it remains a very controversial city that some unflappable tourists will find all the more fascinating because of its reputation.
