Alexandria, Egypt

Alexandria was named after Alexander the Great, its founder, and continues to be one Egypt’s most important cities - in fact, it is the second largest city in the country, with three and a half million people. It is also the country’s largest seaport, and was once one of the world’s most influential cities because of its location. Now, Alexandria is mainly a tourist attraction, holding many ancient artifacts and ruins of interest. You know you’re going to have fun in Alexandria, but first things first. What about Alexandria Hotels?

Budget Hotels

If you’re looking for something cheap there are several options, though you will get what you pay for. The cheapest hotels in Alexandria tend to have friendly service, and only decent accommodations. Then again, at $20 a night, how can you complain? Some notable budget hotels include the Nile Excelsior Hotel, the Hotel Union, the New Welcome House and the Normandy Hotel. Just be warned when you stay at cheap Alexandria hotels you may have to share a bathroom.

Mid-Range Hotels

Mid-range hotels in Alexandria include the Holiday Hotel on Orabi Square and the Hotel Delta on Champollion Street, Mazarita. These hotels may not charm your pants off but you do get your own private bathroom, hot water, and at the Delta, cable television.

Luxury Hotels

The best hotels in Alexandria are to be found along the east shore, quite a distance away from the “old” part of the city.

Some of the most popular “splurge” Alexandria Hotels include the El-Salamlek Palace at Montazah Palace, first built in 1892 and formerly used as a lodge for the prestigious guests of Khedive Abbas Helmi II. The best quality of this hotel is the peace and quiet it offers exhausted travelers. The Four Seasons in San Stefano is certainly luxurious though a bit of a “modern” choice, as is the Renaissance Alexandria.

Not all higher-price hotels are luxurious; many of them offer standard three or four-star services, such as the Sheraton Montazah, the Helnan Palestine, Montazah, the Mercure Romance Alexandria and the Hilton Alexandria Green Plaza. However, they are worth considering as these are good hotels for about $100 compared with great hotels for $400 a night.

If you’re looking for the great hotels with a taste of Egyptian luxury, try the Le Metropole and the Sofitel Cecil Alexandria, which has catered to famous people like Agatha Christie and Winston Churchill.
