Visiting Heliopolis Cairo

Heliopolis, Cairo

Heliopolis Cairo is considered one of the best places to live and visit in Cairo, here you will learn what there is to see and do in Heliopolis. This Cairo travel guide outlines this area's attractions, shopping and more.

Heliopolis, Cairo

The Cairo Heliopolis District, also called “New Egypt”, is a suburban district first established by the Heliopolis Oasis Company in 1905.

The head of the Heliopolis Cairo Oasis project was Belgian industrialist Édouard Louis Joseph, an amateur Egyptologist. His original goal was to save his railway line project, which would link Matariya to Port Said. Unfortunately, the British government took control of the railway. Nevertheless, Joseph stayed in Egypt, still finding much hope and comfort in the land’s many beautiful features. The district grew, though it was at one time filled with foreigners and aristocratic Egyptians. By the 1950s, more middle class residents came to town and before you know it, the distance between Cairo and Heliopolis had all but vanished.

There was also an older Heliopolis in Ancient Egypt, which is now located in the Al-Masalla area of the Al-Matariyyah District, which is nearby the modern Heliopolis.

What Can You Find in Cairo Heliopolis?

The Heliopolis Cairo City district is highly regarded for its amenities and surroundings. This is why it is considered one of the best places to live in Cairo, if not comparable to the more tourist-friendly areas of Islamic Cairo or Giza. In fact, one of the best features about Cairo Heliopolis is that it’s very close to the airport. Heliopolis City also has many recreational facilities, earning it the reputation of being a relaxing part of town in contrast to the high level of excitement and activity of surrounding areas.

Heliopolis Sporting Club

One of the most visited spots in Cairo Heliopolis is the Heliopolis Club, a very popular sporting club, first opened in 1905, shortly after the Heliopolis City district was established. There are at least four other major sporting clubs in the areas, including the El Shams Club, probably the biggest sporting club in size and in total members, as well as the Heliolido Club, El-Ghaba Club and the El-Tayaran Club.

The Merryland

The Merryland is a recreational park with a lake that features a dolphin show, an amusement park and a few restaurants. Heliopolis also has modern cafes, coffee houses and restaurants, with a few traditional Egyptian restaurants for the traveler who doesn’t want to eat anything too familiar. (After all, you’re in Cairo!) There are also a few nightclubs and bars, as well as cinemas just outside the Heliopolis City district.

The population of Heliopolis has increased in recent years and the district is no longer considered a “quiet” suburb, given its rapid growth. This is a great place to visit especially if you want to get away from the heavy traffic of Cairo but not too far from the Egyptian sightseeing you’re looking for.
