A Visit to the Dead Sea in Jordan

The Dead Sea is a salt lake bordering Israel and the West Bank to the west, and Jordan to the east. The Dead Sea has attracted visitors from around the Mediterranean basin for thousands of years. It was one of the world's first health resorts.
Port Aqaba
If you are planning a tour of Egypt and have decided to hop over to Jordan while in the region, you probably already know about the port in Aqaba. This is where the daily ferries from Egypt’s Taba region always land, and where many land-based tours of Jordan can begin. This is also a great location from which to base a trip to the Dead Sea too.
Although the Dead Sea is roughly three hours drive from the port in Aqaba it is well worth the time, and many people will actually hire a taxi from Aqaba for a day in the Dead Sea area. The only other costs associated with such a trip are those for entering the beaches, and these will vary according to the resort or beach area selected.
The Dead Sea
Regardless of which spot you pick to enter the Dead Sea you will be instantly amazed by your buoyancy in the waters. This is due to the incredible saline content of the water which makes it impossible for anything to sink.
It is vitally important to remember the cardinal rule of swimming in such waters, however, and that is to avoid traditional “face down” techniques. There are actually a handful of injuries and even drownings each year due to the manner in which the waters can force the legs of a swimmer to the surface, leaving the head beneath the water.
The mud along the shore is also full of minerals and it is not uncommon to see sunbathers covered completely in the deep grayish-black mud as well. While visiting you should also make a point to do a bit of beach combing because it is perfectly acceptable to retain a hefty piece of the salt or crystals deposited along the shores as a souvenir too.
Nearby Attractions
Is there anything else to see in the Jordanian area of the Red Sea? Absolutely! There is the fascinating town of Mabada which is called the “city of the Mosaics” due to its impressive number of Byzantine period mosaic works.
There is also a wonderful new facility known as the Dead Sea Museum and it is run by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature. The Mujib Reseve is nearby and is the lowest nature reserve in the world. There is also Mount Nebo which allows visitors access to one of the most impressive views of the Jordan River valley and also to excavations that include a church and monument to Moses.
