Alcohol Restrictions in Egypt

The laws in Egypt are very liberal opposed to many of the Islamic countries, but during the month for Ramadan alcohol is completely forbidden. During this time only foreign passport holders are permitted to purchase alcohol according to the law in Egypt. This is not always strictly enforced though.

In Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada, Luxor and other tourist areas alcohol can be purchased even through Ramadan, and if anyone looks like a foreigner passports or IDs will not be checked.

Some of the bars and hotels that cater to the foreign visitors will quit selling alcohol for the Muslim observance of Ramadan so call ahead to see if the alcohol will be sold so you know what to expect.
