Saint Virgin Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church – the Hanging Church in Cairo, Egypt is among the oldest churches in Egypt and the history of a church on this site dates back to the third century Anno Domini.

The Hanging Church is named for its site above a gatehouse of Babylon Fortress, the Roman stronghold in Coptic Cairo; its nave is postponed over a passage.

The church is approached by twenty-nine steps; early visitors to Cairo dubbed it “the Staircase Church.”

The land surface has risen by some six metres since the Roman period so the Roman tower is generally buried below ground, reducing the visible impact of the church’s raised position.

The entrance from the street is thru iron gates under a pointed stone arch. The nineteenth century cover with twin bell towers is then seen beyond a narrow yard finished with modern art biblical designs.

Up the steps and thru the entrance is another little yard leading to the eleventh century outer porch.  Read More…
