Traveling to Egypt to Experience the Wondrous Abu Simbel Temples

Abu Simbel Temple of King Ramses II, a masterpiece of pharaonic arts and buildings in Old EgyptYes, you should definitely consider traveling to Egypt to experience the Abu Simbel Temples.

The surprising Temples of Abu Simbel are among the largest Egyptian tourist attractions, both by acceptance and by sheer size. These two temples are an amazing sight, exploding toward the blue sky.

There are two temples at Abu Simbel, built by Ramesses II in the thirteenth century B.C. They were intended to stand as monuments to himself and his queen, the famous queen Nefertari. Naturally, being constructed by the head of an empire, they were also planned to dissuade the close by Nubians from taking any actions against Egypt.

The Temples of Abu Simbel in Upper Egypt was saved from the rising waters of Lake Nasser in an enormous archaeological rescue plan subsidized by UNESCO in the 1960s.

The complex of temples devoted to the Pharaoh Ramses II “The Great” remain a very important and rememberable destination.

Abu Simbel is a hamlet lying 280 km south of Aswan and only forty km north of the Sudanese border. It’s a little settlement with little to draw in visitors except for its great temples for which it is famous.

Egypt Tours Packages to Aswan, Egypt – What to See?

Feluccas on the Nile river, AswanAll Egypt tours packages should ideally include a visit to Aswan and its Nubian museum, which is home to a collection of Nubian artifacts which were recovered before the flooding of historically Nubian areas by Lake Nasser.

Another place worth exploring in Aswan is the Botanical Gardens, a pretty park at the south end of the Kornish Al-Nile. Just south of the town is the Fatimid Graveyard, which is also worth a brief trip. A bit farther south is the Unfinished Obelisk, the biggest ancient obelisk known.

Elephantine Island is the location of two Nubian towns, Koti and Siou, as well as the temples of Khnum, Sati and Pepinakht-Heqiab. The Aswan Museum is also found here, which homes items which have been discovered in archaeological digs on the island. It’s possible to get here from the east bank by regular boat taxi service.

Ancient Egypt tours must include a trip to the amazing temples of Abu Simbel

Nefertari Temple in Abu Simbel

If you ever get the chance your ancient Egypt tours must include a trip to the amazing Abu Simbel Temples.

The primary feature of the facade of the Great Temple of Abu Simbel is 4 larger than life monumental statues of Ramses II. The dimensions of the facade is nearly 120 feet wide, and 100 feet high; while the statues are 67 feet high. They picture the pharaoh seated, with his hands resting on his upper legs. Parts of one of the statues has fragmented, while the statues’ legs contain some graffiti made by visitors in the 1800s.

The Small Temple of Abu Simbel is found about one hundred meters from the main temple. It’s devoted the Nefertari, the key spouse of Ramses II. Apparently, this was only the second Egyptian temple that was devoted to a queen. There are 6 great statues that are about 10 meters high each, at the gateway of the small temple. They show Ramses II and his main wife Nefertari. The statues have equal heights.
