… During our one-hour drive from the old airport to the Mena House Oberoi Hotel next the Pyramids; I had the opportunity to fully appreciate the Egyptians’ total lack of regard for traffic lightsand regulations. The traffic was bumper-to-bumper, door-to-door, metal to wooden cart, Toyota to donkey, Ford to camel. There are as many donkey and horse carts in Cairo as there are cars. The only law drivers obey is that they must honk there horn every 4.5 seconds – -day and all night. The din is constant, loud, unnerving, and must have some meaning for the natives. They intuitively ebb and flow with precise disorder while bringing their vehicles (motorized and otherwised) to the brink of collision before adroitly executing dips and banks that would be the envy of the Blue Angles.
One bumper sticker I saw read in English, “I’m not deaf. I’m honking, too.”
After a few days doing the tourist sites, we left the bustling bazaars of Cairo for the quiet of an uncrowded off-season Nile cruise. Cairo’s Tahrir Square was the focal point of the 2011 Egyptian Revolution against former president Hosni Mubarak. More than 50,000 protesters first occupied the square on 25 January, during which the area’s wireless services were reported to be impaired. The uprising was mainly a campaign of non-violent civil resistance, which featured a series of demonstrations, marches, acts of civil disobedience, and labour strikes. Millions of protesters from a variety of socio-economic and religious backgrounds demanded the overthrow of the regime of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
The uprising took place in Cairo, Alexandria, and in other cities in Egypt, following the Tunisian revolution that resulted in the overthrow of the long-time Tunisian president.
On 11 February, following weeks of determined popular protest and pressure, Mubarak resigned from office.

“… Several men are holding grimly onto the basket, murmuring comforting words to us with encouraging smiles on their faces, all in Arabic of course. One last burst of flame and we are off. Slowly we ascend into the sky, not a sound except the occasional burst from the burner.

The sun has just peeped over the horizon as we glide across the fields of wheat, sugarcane and lucerne. The farmers are burning cane stubble and a haze of smoke hangs in the air with hardly a breath of wind to blow it away.
With another big burst of hot air to fill our balloon we climb to 500 metres. The ground now taking on small dimensions as we soar above. Then dropping down to the ground, skimming across Luxor’s West Bank. I nearly touch a date palm as we pass over houses, sleepy children staring up at us. Their parents already out in the field. A little awkward I feel, us wealthy tourists, in our balloon, invading their privacy. Something they could never afford as they toil away trying to etch out their existence.
Landing safely we are swarmed upon by the usual begging children. Where we are duly whisked off back to our five star hotels. Certificate in hand to verify our achievement???”
